They are both gloves, they are both for hitting people, and they are not interchangeable. Using one where the other belongs is one of the more common ways people get hurt in a gym.
They are solving different problems
A boxing glove has one job: put as much padding as possible between your knuckles and the target, while keeping your hand in a fixed fist. You do not need to grip anything in boxing, so the glove closes your hand for you and never has to open.
An MMA glove has to let you grip, frame, post on the mat and finish a submission — all while still being able to strike. That means an open palm, free fingers, and far less padding across the knuckles, because padding is bulk and bulk is the enemy of grip.
Neither is a compromised version of the other. Each is optimal for its own sport.
What that means in practice
MMA gloves are right for grappling, clinch work, positional sparring and light technical striking. They are wrong for hard striking rounds — there is simply not enough foam over the knuckles, and the person absorbing that is your training partner.
Boxing gloves are right for any hard striking, on pads, bags or people. They are useless the moment you need to grip, which is why you cannot wear them to roll.
Sparring gloves sit in between
MMA sparring gloves carry noticeably more padding than a grappling glove while staying open-palm. They exist because MMA fighters still need to spar hard, and neither a grappling glove nor a boxing glove does that job in an MMA context.
They are heavier and bulkier than grappling gloves, which is the point and also why nobody wants to grapple in them.
Most serious people own both
If you train MMA properly you will end up with grappling gloves for the mat and boxing gloves for striking rounds, and use each for what it was built for. That is not overspending — it is the same reason you do not run in football boots.
If you are starting out and can only buy one pair, buy for whichever half of the sport you are actually doing in your first months. For most beginners that is grappling and technique, which means grappling gloves.
A note on hand wraps
Wraps go under both. Whatever the glove, your hand still contains the same small bones, and the open-palm design of an MMA glove means the wrap is doing even more of the structural work.
