Lever or prong, and how tight

A belt does not hold your back up. It gives your abdominal wall something to push against, which raises the pressure inside your torso and gives your spine a rigid column to work with. That is why it earns its place on heavy squats and deadlifts and does nothing at all on curls. Stiffness matters more than width for most lifters — a belt that folds under bracing is not doing the job.

A lever closes at exactly the same tension every single rep, which is what you want under a squat. A prong lets you run it looser for deadlifts and tighter for squats without owning two belts, at the cost of a few seconds between sets. Neither is better; they suit different lifters. Message us and tell us what you actually lift. The gym range has the straps, wraps and sleeves.

What does a lifting belt actually do?

It gives your abdominal wall something to brace against, raising intra-abdominal pressure. It does not support your spine by itself.

Lever belt or prong belt?

A lever gives identical tension every rep, which suits squats. A prong lets you change tension between lifts without buying two belts.

How tight should a lifting belt be?

Tight enough to push against, loose enough to take a full breath into your stomach. If you cannot brace into it, it is too tight.

Do beginners need a belt?

Not at first. Learn to brace without one, then add a belt when the loads get heavy enough that bracing alone is the limit.
