MMA Equipment in Mauritius
Grappling gloves, shin and foot guards, kick shields and head guards for MMA, stocked at Nova Sports in Port Louis.
Choosing MMA equipment
MMA gloves are open-palm and much lighter than boxing gloves, because you have to grip, frame and submit in them. That means far less padding across the knuckles, so they are for grappling and light technical work — not for hard sparring, where a boxing glove is the safer tool. Many fighters own both and use each for what it is built for; we set out why the two are not interchangeable in more detail. See every pair on our MMA gloves page.
Shin and foot guards matter more in MMA than in most striking arts, because the same shin checks kicks and the same instep is on the mat. If you also box, the boxing range carries the heavier gloves; the Muay Thai range has the kick shields and pads.
What is the difference between MMA gloves and boxing gloves?
MMA gloves are open-palm and light so you can grip and grapple; boxing gloves are heavily padded and closed. They are not interchangeable for hard sparring.
Can I spar in MMA gloves?
Only for light technical work. For hard striking rounds use boxing gloves — there is not enough padding across the knuckles in an MMA glove.
What MMA gear does a beginner need?
Grappling gloves, a mouth guard and shin guards will cover most beginner classes. Ask your coach what your gym requires before buying more.
