Choosing Thai pads
Thai pads, also called arm pads, are what a Muay Thai coach wears to catch round kicks, knees, elbows and body punches. They strap along the forearm and have a handle to grip, so the holder can meet a kick instead of just absorbing it. A curved pad wraps the arm, which keeps it in place when a hard kick lands.
We have two. The curved leather Thai pad (Rs 2,900) is red and white, with three hook-and-loop straps and a padded grab handle. The rexine Thai pad (Rs 1,800) is black and red; rexine is a coated synthetic leather that wipes clean after a humid session and needs less looking after than hide. Both are sold individually, and most coaches take two so they can hold a pair. For full-power kicks there is also the curved kick shield, and for punching combinations, focus mitts. The rest is in the Muay Thai range.
What is the difference between Thai pads and focus mitts?
Thai pads strap along the forearm and take kicks, knees and elbows as well as punches. Focus mitts are worn on the hand and are for punching combinations.
Leather or rexine Thai pads?
The leather pad is the heavier-duty option, with three straps and a padded handle. The rexine pad costs less and wipes clean after training, which suits home and occasional use.
Are Thai pads sold as a pair?
No, they are sold individually. Most coaches buy two so they can hold a pair.
