Open face or full face
An open-face guard protects the temples, forehead and the sides of the head while leaving your vision wide. It is what most boxing gyms use for regular sparring, because you need to see shots coming. A guard with cheek protection or a face bar trades some peripheral vision for far more protection to the nose and cheekbones — the choice if you are sparring hard, coming back from a facial injury, or working with heavier partners.
