When grip is the limit, not the point
Straps exist for one situation: your hands give out before the muscle you are actually training does. On heavy rows and pulls that is common, and finishing the set with your back rather than stopping with your fingers is the whole reason they are on the wall. The flip side is that grip is trainable, so strapping every set from the first warm-up quietly removes a thing you probably want to keep. Most people strap the top sets and pull the rest raw.
A standard strap wraps the bar and lets you release it fast. Figure-8s loop closed, hold harder and are slower to get out of — which is why they suit shrugs and heavy holds and not anything you might need to drop. Hooks take the hand out of the equation almost entirely. Grip pads are a different idea again: bar comfort rather than attachment. Tell us the lift on WhatsApp and we will point you at the right one. Gloves handle palm comfort; the full gym range is at the same counter.
When should I use lifting straps?
When your grip fails before the target muscle on heavy pulls or rows. For lighter work, pulling raw keeps your grip developing.
What is the difference between straps and figure-8 straps?
A standard strap wraps the bar and releases quickly. A figure-8 loops closed and holds harder, which suits shrugs and heavy holds but is slower to escape.
Do straps weaken your grip?
Only if you use them for everything. Strapping the heaviest sets and pulling the rest without them keeps grip strength progressing.
