Ask five people at the gym what a “back support belt” is for, and you get five answers. Some mean a wide neoprene belt for lower-back support during squats. Others mean a stiff leather lifting belt for heavy deadlifts. So which back support belt do you actually need in Mauritius? They solve different problems, and most people only need one.
Here is the difference, how to wear each type, how tight to fasten it, and how sizing works from S to XL.
A soft back support belt and a stiff leather lifting belt do different jobs
A soft back support (lumbar) belt suits repeated movement — bending, lifting boxes, standing for long shifts, or a general gym session with light to moderate weights. It is soft and padded (often neoprene), wraps most of the way around the torso, and closes with hook-and-loop straps you can adjust through the day.
A stiff leather lifting belt does one thing: it braces you hard for a small number of heavy reps, usually a squat or a deadlift. It does not stretch — that rigidity gives your braced core something solid to push against under load. It is not for wearing all day, or for bending and twisting.
Neither belt “holds up” your back on its own. The soft belt works with your posture over a shift or a session; the stiff belt works with a deliberate breath-and-brace before a heavy lift.
The soft back support belt: bending, carrying, shift work, general gym sessions
Reach for a back support belt if you lift, restock or move stock during your shift; bend a lot at work; want extra support for general gym sessions mixing cardio, machines and moderate weights; or just want a wide, comfortable panel across the lower back for long days on your feet.
Nova’s Nova Lumbar Belt For Back Support has a wide, contoured lumbar panel with vertical stays sewn into the back, a hook-and-loop closure, and blue elastic pull-straps that cross over the closure for extra tension. It sits between your ribs and hip bones — not a powerlifting belt. For a simpler neoprene option at a lower price, browse the full back support belts range.
How to wear it
Sit the belt so the widest part covers your lower back, then pull it snug — firm enough that it does not slide or ride up, loose enough that you can still bend, breathe normally and go about your day. It should feel supportive, not restrictive. Loosen it between long stretches of standing or lifting rather than wearing it clamped tight all shift.
The stiff lifting belt: bracing on heavy squats and deadlifts
A leather lifting belt — lever or prong — is for lifters whose squats and deadlifts are heavy enough that bracing, not muscle strength, is the limiting factor. It is worn tight only for the lift itself, then loosened straight after. Our lifting belts range carries both closures; the difference between them is covered in our lever vs prong lifting belt guide.
How to wear it
Fasten it around your midsection, roughly where your belly button sits, snug enough to push your abdominal wall out against it when you brace and breathe in, but not so tight you cannot take that breath. If you cannot get a full brace with the belt on, it is too tight. Tighten it before your working set, loosen it once done.
Back support belt sizing in Mauritius: S to XL
Nova’s back support belts run S to XL, sized by waist rather than by clothing size — measure around your waist where the belt will sit, not your trouser size, and choose accordingly. If you are between sizes, message us on WhatsApp at +230 5816 4444 with your measurement and we will help you pick the right one.
A belt is not a treatment
A back support belt or a lifting belt is a training and work aid, not a medical device, and wearing one does not treat back pain or injury. If you have existing back pain, a diagnosed injury, or are recovering from one, see a doctor or physiotherapist before using a belt — they can advise whether one suits your situation. This guide is general information, not medical advice.
Which one should you buy
Repeated bending, carrying and general gym sessions point to a soft back support belt; heavy squats and deadlifts point to a stiff leather lifting belt. Some lifters eventually own both. Browse the full gym range, and see our gym accessories guide for what else to check before you buy.
What is the difference between a back support belt and a lifting belt?
A back support belt is soft, wide and adjustable, worn for repeated bending, carrying and general gym sessions. A lifting belt is stiff leather, worn tight only for heavy squats and deadlifts to help you brace, then loosened again straight after.
How tight should a back support belt be?
Snug enough to stay in place and give support, loose enough that you can still bend and breathe normally. If it is restricting your breathing or movement, loosen it.
What size back support belt do I need?
Nova’s back support belts run S to XL, sized by waist measurement. Measure around your waist where the belt will sit, or message us on WhatsApp with your measurement and we will help you choose.
