Most people choose a punching bag by price or colour, then find out too late that nothing at home is strong enough to hang it from. Buying a punching bag in Mauritius comes down to three questions: what height suits your ceiling, what you are going to hang it from, and whether a heavy bag or a speed bag is the tool you actually need.

Punching bag sizes in Mauritius: pick the right height

The Nova Sports Heavy Punching Bag comes in five heights — 60 cm, 80 cm, 100 cm, 120 cm and 150 cm — and arrives already filled, so there is no sand or textile filling to source yourself.

As a rule, a shorter bag hangs higher off the ground and suits punching only. A longer bag reaches lower, so you can work knees and low kicks too, which suits Muay Thai and MMA training. The height that works in your space depends on your ceiling: measure the drop from your fixing point to the floor, then leave room above for the chain and swivel, and below for the height you want to strike at. Not sure which height fits your ceiling? Message us on WhatsApp on +230 5816 4444 before you order.

Where and how to hang a punching bag safely

This is the step people skip, and it matters most. A filled bag is heavy and moves with real force on every strike, so wherever you hang it has to be rated for that — not just for the bag's resting weight.

  • Ceiling joist or beam: the fixing must go into a structural joist or beam, never into a false ceiling or plasterboard alone. If you are not sure what is above your ceiling, get a builder or installer to check before you drill.
  • Wall bracket: needs a solid wall — brick or concrete, not a partition — and a bracket rated for a swinging load, fitted so the bag hangs clear and turns without hitting the wall.
  • Freestanding stand: a stand built for punching bags, with a wide, weighted base. Check its stated load capacity against the bag you are buying.

Whichever option you choose, check what it can carry before you buy the bag, not after. The Nova Sports Heavy Punching Bag comes with a four-point chain and swivel set, which spreads the load across four fixing points and lets the bag turn freely, taking less punishment than a single hook. The reinforced seams and straps at the top carry the same load.

Heavy bag vs speed bag

A heavy bag is the general-purpose tool: power shots, combinations, and, depending on the length you choose, knees and low kicks, for boxing, Muay Thai and MMA. It is the one most people should start with, at home or in a club gym.

A speed bag, like the Nova Leather Speed Bag, is a different exercise altogether. Its teardrop shape and laced top are built to rebound quickly off a platform, and it does nothing for power — what it builds is timing, rhythm and hand speed. It needs a platform and a swivel to mount to; if you do not have one, ask us and we can point you in the right direction. Most boxers end up with both.

Gloves and wraps to use on a bag

Wrap your hands before every bag session — wraps protect your wrists and knuckles, and gloves alone are not a substitute. Our Nova Hand Wraps are elastic, come in eight colours, and are sold in 3 m (Rs 400) and 5 m (Rs 450) lengths. For wrap length and technique, see our guide to wrapping your hands.

For gloves, bag work is usually done in slightly heavier gloves than pad work, for the extra padding against a surface that does not give. Our guide to choosing boxing gloves covers sizing in full, and the bags and speed balls range has the rest of what you need to set up a bag at home.

Punching bag price

The Nova Sports Heavy Punching Bag is priced by height, from Rs 1,650 for the 60 cm bag up to Rs 2,800 for the 150 cm bag, in red, blue, dark blue or black. The Nova Leather Speed Bag is Rs 1,200. Exact pricing for the size and colour you want is on each product page.

What size punching bag should I buy?

It depends on your ceiling height and what you want to train. A shorter bag (60–80 cm) suits punching only; a longer bag (120–150 cm) hangs low enough for knees and low kicks. Measure your ceiling drop first, and message us on WhatsApp if you are unsure which height will fit.

Can I hang a punching bag from any ceiling?

No. It has to be fixed into a structural joist or beam, not plasterboard alone, or mounted with a bracket on a solid wall, or set on a proper stand. Always check what your ceiling, wall or stand can actually carry before you hang a filled bag from it.

Should I get a heavy bag or a speed bag first?

Start with a heavy bag — it covers punches and, depending on the length, kicks, and works for boxing, Muay Thai or MMA. A speed bag is a good addition later, for hand speed and rhythm rather than power.
